    We have an immediate opening for a Packaging Manager in our production facility.  The Packaging Manager reports to the Production Manager and is a supervisory role responsible for effectively supporting shift operations alongside the Production Manager, Roasting Manager and other Production Supervisor(s) as well as effectively running shift operations in their place(s) when they are not available.  The ideal candidate will be experienced in food manufacturing and managing teams to deliver results in four key operational areas:  People, Quality, Service, and Cost. The candidate should be growth oriented and interested in assuming positions of greater responsibility as their skills progress.

    Responsibilities

    The Packaging Manager function has the following essential duties and areas of responsibility:

    • Always be mindful of and adhere to GMP’s, Quality and Food Safety requirements.
    • Build and develop a team of 20-35 technicians to consistently achieve performance objectives in a safe work environment
    • Maintain on-going knowledge and experience with proper operation of all packaging equipment. 
    • Ensure manufactured products are produced and available on time to fulfill customer orders.
    • Ensure product and package quality standards are being achieved at all times.
    • Ensure sanitation and housekeeping are maintained at expected levels, ensuring the plant in tour ready status, at all times.
    • Actively manage department activities to deliver against cost objectives.
    • Ensure the following quality control measures are successfully & timely identified when/if present and ensure issues are resolved:
    • Ability to adjust weights and bag length as needed.
    • Ability to recognize when there is a heat problem and adjust heat as needed.
    • Ability to put tape on the tape machine and adjust as needed for different products.
    • Ability to put labels in the computer and thread the label through the label maker.
    • Ability to change the case count.
    • Ability to adjust the film and keep the vertical lined up at film change and during the run.
    • Ability to perform quality checks during the run, weights, seals and appearance of package.
    • Ability to clean jaws and knife at every film change.
    • Ability to make sure all cases are presentable and sealed tightly.
    • Make sure all labels are as straight as possible when applying to cases.
    • Make sure all pallets are stacked as straight as possible.
    • Participate in “hands-on” work as needed.
    • Strict adherence to all company policies, procedures and safety rules.

    Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill(s), and/or abilities (including physical abilities) required to satisfactorily perform each essential duty.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent (for example a GED).  Bachelors Degree strongly preferred.
    • Minimum of 2-4+ years of management experience in an industrial manufacturing setting, preferably in a food manufacturing facility.
    • Demonstrable experience of being results focused, self-motivated and highly organized.
    • Demonstrable experience of stellar people management, team building/training and leadership.
    • Demonstrable experience with: analytical problem solving; examination/formulation of policy/procedure and strategy implementation.
    • Intermediate or higher user experience with all Microsoft Office Software, specifically with Word and Excel.  Prior experience with SAP is highly preferable.
    • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position which, at times, are required to successfully perform each essential responsibility.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the core responsibilities.  These physical demands may include, among other functions:
    • Be able to stand and walk constantly for approximately 8 or more hours a day.
    • Be able to sustain constant hand, finger and elbow movement while performing packaging machine operator functions.
    • Be able to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance (to include on small ladders); talk or hear; taste or smell.
    • Be able to occasionally sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
    • Be able to bend over the machine to thread and seal the packaging film.
    • Be able to bend or kneel to stack cartons on pallets.
    • Be able to handle full cartons at least twice during the packaging process.
    • Be able to mash firmly on coffee packages for quality checks.
    • Be able to thread film through machine former, including threading film, without the use of tape, on the Wright machines.
    • Be able to frequently lift and/or move full cartons / other materials (up to a chest high level) that weigh from 3-32 pounds:
    • Possibly lifting packaging film weighing up to 50 lbs. chest high to load on machine up to 5 times a day.
        • Overhead lifting of cartons / packaging materials.
        • Bending or kneeling to stack cartons.
        • Bending, kneeling and climbing ladders to put packaging film on machines.
        • Be able to adjust the film and keep the vertical lined up at film change and during the run.
    • Be able to perform quality checks during the run, weights, seals and appearance of package.
    • Must be at least hand jack certified or willing to train and acquire proper certification to prove safe operation.  Any forklift certification (Standup, Reach, Sit down) is a plus.
    • Ability to work within the work environment characteristics experienced while performing the essential functions for this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions:
    • Frequently working near production machinery and occasionally near hand jacks or forklifts.
    • Frequently working in an environment with variable temperatures.
